Weeks 1-7, Assignment 1/2

Refractory Period & Absolute refractory period Brief period which a local area of the axon's membrane resists restimulation, for about 0.5 ms, after the membrane surpasses the threshold potential, it will not respond to any stimulus, no matter how strong is the absolute refractory period. p.413
Membrane potentials There is a slight excess of positive ions on the outside of the membrane, and a slight excess negative ions on the inside of the membrane. Results in a difference in electrical charge across the plasma membrane-membrane potential P.409
Isometric contraction Is a contraction in which muscle length remains the same while muscle tension increases. Isometric means same length
Sarcomere a segment of the myofibril between two successive Z discs (z lines) Functions as a contractile muscle.
Sliding filament Figure 17-12: During contraction, myosin cross bridges pull the thin filaments toward the center of each of the two sarcomeres, shortening the myofibril & entire muscle fiber.
T/F Without red bone marrow, bones would not be able to make blood cells True
Axial Structure Supports and protects organs, and provides framework for muscles that anchor and stabilize the appendicular bones.
Astronaut and bone density Compared to ta person on earth an astronaut, will experience bone loss at an increased rate
Mineral storage- Calcium Bones store calcium, vital for various bodily functions: muscle contraction, nerve signaling, & blood clotting. When calcium levels in blood drop, the body will release calcium from bones to maintain homeostasis.
Mineral storage-Phosphorous Also stored in bones, essential for energy production, cell function, and the formation of DNA & RNA
Connective tissue the most widespread & diverse tissues in the body & is found nearly in every organ. Comes from tissue called mesenchyme, originates from mesoderm (primary germ layer)
