| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Absolute refractory period | the time after the neuron fires an action potential where it is impossible to generate another action potential regardless of how strong the stimulus is |
| membrane potential | difference in electrical charge across plasma membranes |
| resting membrane pontential | membrane potential maintained by a nonconducting neurons plasma membrane |
| local potential | a slight shift away from the resting membrane potential in a specific region of the plasma membrane |
| stimulated-gated channels | ion channels that open in response to chemical produced by a sensory stimulus or by a chemical stimulus received by another neuron |
| ligand-gated channels | stimulus gated channels that are triggered by ligands, which are signal molecules that bind to a receptor |
| hyperpolarization | movement of membrane potential away from zero (below the resting membrane potential) |
| electrical synapse | occurs where two cells are joined end to end by gap junctions |
| synaptic knob | a tiny bulge at the end of a terminal branch of a presynaption neuron's axon |
| synaptic cleft | space between the synaptic knob and the plasma membrane of the postsynaptic neuron |
