TermDefinition
Homeostasis condition and state of a body being within parameters of optimal function
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid or the genetic material with essential information. Known for its double helix spiral shape due to base pairing of adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine.
Cell Membrane The border of cells that separate intracellular components from the extracellular environment. The plasma membrane
Fluid Mosaic Model Referring to the cross section of cell membranes and includes the various components in cell membranes such as the phosopholipid bilayer, carbohydrate chains, glycolipids, glycoproteins, and membrane channel proteins.
Nucleus The structure or organelle in cells that hold the genetic information and is also referred to as the "control center" of cells.
Diffusion Movement of particles or molecules across a concentration gradient from high concentration to low concentration.
Extracellular matrix Material surrounding cells and attaches to cells as to hold cells together in tissue.
Collagen Structural protein in the extracellular matrix and most abundant, making up more than one fourth of proteins in the body.
Axial skeleton Bones of the skull, vertebral column, and ribs
Appendicular skeleton Bones referring to the upper and lower extremities, such as the arms, legs, hands, and feet.
Neurotransmitter The means for communication between neurons. More than 50 compounds are known to be neurotransmitters, released in specific locations and specific pathways.
Acetylcholine A unique neurotransmitter synthesized in neurons, and has an excitatory effect usually relating to muscle contraction.
