What is physiology? The study of how the body’s structures function to maintain life.
What is homeostasis? The body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions despite external changes.
Which two systems are most responsible for maintaining homeostasis? Nervous system and endocrine system.
What are the three parts of a homeostatic control system? Receptor (senses change), Control center (processes info), Effector (produces response).
What is the basic unit of life? The cell
What is selective permeability? The plasma membrane allows some substances to cross but not others.
What is diffusion? Movement of molecules from high to low concentration.
What is osmosis? Movement of water across a membrane from low solute to high solute concentration.
What are the four main tissue types? Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous.
What is the largest organ of the body? The skin.
What are the main functions of the integumentary system? Protection, temperature regulation, sensation, vitamin D production.
