QuestionAnswer
Major differences in RNA Uracil is swapped out for Thymine, it's single stranded
mRNA function encodes proteins
tRNA function acts as adaptor between mRNA and amino acids
rRNA forms the ribosomes
Transcription def reading a DNA template to synthesize a strand of RNA. Different genes can have the template strand on either side of the double helix
Big points of RNA synthesis Always synthesized from 5' to 3', doesn't require a primer, and the polymerase reads the template in one direction
Transcription Factors def proteins that assist in the recognition of/regulation of gene expression
What are the 2 basic regions of a gene? the coding region and regulating region
Promoter function helps begin transcription
Termination def happens when there's a sequence in DNA that tells it to stop
How is RNA modified? (what is added?) 5' cap, 3' poly A tail (these help interactions with the ribosome)
How does RNA move from the nucleus to the cytoplasm? It must bind to proteins (highly regulated)
what does the 5' end always have? GU
what does the 3' end always have AG
what is alternate splicing? generates additional protein diversity. can make more than one protein from a gene

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
