TermDefinition
AVERAGE A function that calculates the simple average of a dataset.
Absolute Reference A cell reference that stays fixed when a formula is copied from one cell to another.
Accounting An option in the Number Format drop-down menu that defines a number as money with the appropriate monetary symbol and two decimal places. The user does not have as many ways to format negative numbers as the Currency option.
Algorithm The part of a calculation that is applied to the measure. Example: average revenue.
Alignment The way values in a cell are positioned.
Area Chart A type of chart that combines a line chart and a bar chart to show changes in quantities over time. Area charts display the height of each category in relation to the height of the other categories.
Argument The information that a function requires to perform the intended calculation.
Average A function or PivotTable Value Field setting that displays the average of the values.
Bar Chart A type of chart that presents data with horizontal bars.
Bold A feature in the Font group that thickens and darkens the font face, making it stand out.
Borders An icon in the Font group of the Home menu that, when selected, gives multiple options to add lines, or “borders,” to one or more sides of a cell.
COUNT A function that counts the number of numbers in a dataset.
COUNTA A function that counts the number of cells that have values, i.e., non-blank cells.
Calculated Column A column in an Excel table in which a calculation is created in any of the cells and then automatically applied to all the cells in that column.
Category An element within a dataset that is used to classify nonnumerical values.
Cell A small box that stores an individual piece of data or a calculation in a worksheet.
Centering Aligning values in the center of a cell.
Chart A visual depiction of a dataset.
Chart Data Range An element in the Chart dialog window that defines the range of values of a worksheet that contain data for a chart.
Column A stack of cells arranged vertically from the top to the bottom of a worksheet.
Column Chart A type of chart that presents data with vertical bars.
Column Headings The first row in a dataset that contains labels describing the information in the dataset.
Column Values An element in the Chart dialog window that defines the data series, usually headings, that will be used in a chart
Columns An element of a PivotTable that defines how source data will be categorized in a column
Count A function or PivotTable Value Field setting that displays the number of different values
Count Numbers A PivotTable Value Field setting that displays the number of numbers from a set of values.
Currency An option in the Number Format drop-down menu that defines a number as money with the appropriate monetary symbol and two decimal places. The user can format negative numbers in various ways
Custom Sort A sorting feature that allows users to sort the data in a table by more than one field at a time.
Data A group of menu items used to aid in importing and working with data.
Data Labels The actual value of data displayed in a chart or graph

Date An option in the Number Format drop-down menu that defines a number as a date, which can be formatted in various ways.
Delimiter A character or symbol that demonstrates where data should be split.
Draw A group of menu items used to insert freehand sketches into worksheets.
Duplicate Data Data that are entered more than once when all elements of the data are the same.
Dynamic A formula that references and responds to changes in values in other cells.
Expression The calculation prescribed by a formula in a spreadsheet.
File A group of menu items used to manipulate workbooks
Filtering A feature that allows users to limit the number of visible rows in a worksheet.
Filters An element of a PivotTable that screens the data as they are placed in the PivotTable
