Homeostatic Imbalance When the body’s internal environment becomes unstable — can lead to illness or disease.
Negative Feedback A control system that maintains stability by reversing a change (for example, sweating when you’re hot).
Positive Feedback A process that strengthens or increases a change (for example, contractions during childbirth).
Dorsal Cavity The body cavity that includes the cranial (brain) and spinal (spinal cord) cavities
Ventral Cavity The body cavity that includes the thoracic (chest) and abdominopelvic cavities.
Midsagittal Plane A plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Transverse Plane A plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts.
Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform major body functions (for example, the digestive system or respiratory system).
Cytology The study of cells — their structure, function, and chemistry.
Abdominopelvic Cavity A large cavity below the diaphragm that contains organs like the stomach, liver, and intestines
