TermDefinition
Osteoblasts Bone-building cells that secrete the organic matrix and help deposit calcium salts during bone formation.
Epiphyseal Plate Also known as the growth plate; a layer of cartilage between the epiphysis and diaphysis where bone lengthens during growth.
Osteoporosis Age related condition where bones lose mineral density, becoming weak and brittle.
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Specialized endoplasmic reticulum in muscle cells that stores and releases calcium ions needed for muscle contraction.
Latent Period The brief phase in a muscle twitch right after stimulation, when calcium is released into the sarcoplasm.
Synarthrosis An immovable joint, such as those found between the bones of the skull.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) The molecule that provides energy for muscle contraction and many other cellular processes.
Glycogen The storage form of glucose found in muscle and liver cells, used as an energy reserve.
Microglia Specialized immune cells in the central nervous system that destroy pathogens and remove damaged tissue.
Epithelial Tissue Tissue that covers body surfaces, lines body cavities, and forms glands for protection, absorption, and secretion.
Connective Tissue The most abundant body tissue that provides support, protection, and transport; includes bone, cartilage, and blood.
Myosin Heads (Cross-Bridges) Projections on myosin filaments that attach to actin to pull during muscle contraction.
