Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment All Phases

QuestionAnswer
Planning & Scoping & Problem Formulation: Planning & Scoping Gathering lots of information with all the right people regarding the risk assessment tasks to be completed
Planning & Scoping & Problem Formulation: Problem Formulation Taking all the information from the planning & scoping phase to create a conceptual model and an analysis plan
Planning & Scoping & Problem Formulation: Important aspects Defining context, purpose, scope. ID considerations related to children, cumulative risk, EJ, sustainability. Defining responsibilities, resources and timeline. Involving public and stakeholders. Find past assessments to review and what has changed.
Planning & Scoping & Problem Formulation: Output Conceptual Model showing full set of sources, exposure paths, endpoints. Analysis plan with planned technical aspects of the assessment.
Hazard Identification Purpose: Identify the type of hazard to human health (e.g., cancer, birth defects) posed by the exposure of interest for a given risk assessment & characterize the quality and weight of evidence
Hazard Identification Important aspects: Uses AVAILABLE data on the type of hazard. Evaluates the confidence we have in the data.
Hazard Identification Output: Summary of harzard identification and weight of evidence.
Dose Response Assessment Purpose: Describes how the likelihood and severity of adverse health effects (the responses) are related to the amount and condition of exposure to an agent (the dose provided)
Dose Response Assessment Important aspects: Estimates either a threshold or a linear curve.
Dose Response Assessment Output: A dose-response curve, with uncertainty bars.
Exposure Assessment Purpose: Describe the processes that affect the transport and transformation of agents from their source to a dose
Exposure Assessment Important aspects: Measuring or estimating the magnitude, frequency, and duration of human exposure.
Exposure Assessment Output: A numerical estimate of exposure or dose.
Risk Characterization Purpose: Integrate information from the proceeding steps of the risk assessment to synthesize an overall conclusion about risk
Risk Characterization Important aspects: Calculates quantitative estimate of risk and qualitative description of uncertainty, using TCCR principles.
Risk Characterization Output: An integrative analysis of risk, plus: Restatement of the scope of the risk assessment, Major assumptions and uncertainties, Reasonable alternative interpretations.
How is risk calculated according to the Toxicology Education Foundation? Risk = hazard x exposure.
What does hazard mean in the context of risk assessment? The potential to cause harm.
What is an exposure pathway? The course that a hazard takes from a source to a receptor (human or animal) through the environment.
What is an exposure route? The mechanism by which the transfer of a contaminant occurs, such as inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact.
What does 'fit for purpose' mean in human health risk assessment? The risk assessment is tailored to the specific decision-making context and provides the right level of detail to inform choices among risk management options.
What categories of information should be considered during planning & scoping? Context, purpose & scope, overarching considerations, responsibilities, resources & timeline, scientific peer review, and public involvement.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
