Brain parts vocab

TermDefinition
Hindbrain Medulla, pons, reticular formation, cerebellum
Midbrain Basal ganglia - substantia nigra
Forebrain Thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala, hippocampus, cerebral cortex, pituitary gland, septum, cingulate gyrus, corpus callosum
Medulla Controls automatic functions
Pons (Bridge) Connects cerebellum/ medulla to the rest of brain, controls facial expressions/ breathing
Reticular Formation Reward center (dopamine), regulates arousal, sleep/wake, pain reception, controls consciousness
Cerebellum Controls voluntary coordination (fine), aids in nonverbal learning/ memory
Basal Ganglia (Substantia Nigra) Makes movements smooth, helps with the ability to stop moving, plan sequences of behavior Produces dopamine that aids in smooth movement
Thalamus "Relay station", sends sensory information to other parts of brain
Hypothalamus (Below/next to thalamus) Controls the 5 F's - Fight/flight, fun, food, Fahrenheit, fornication (drives related to survival)
Amygdala (At the end of each hippocampal arm) Emotional processing - fear, aggression, anger
Hippocampus (Wrapped around thalamus) Converts short term memory to long term memory for recall
Cerebral Cortex Thought, reasoning, decision-making Somatosensory cortex, Broca's area, Wernicke's area, angular gyrus, primary motor cortex, olfactory bulbs 4 lobes - Frontal (Motor cortex, Somatosensory cortex), Parietal, Occipital, Temporal
Pituitary Gland "Master gland" of endocrine system Regulates hormones (growth, oxytocin...) - release/ production
Septum Regulates aggression/ rageful behavior
Cingulate Gyrus Associates memories to smell/pain Contributes to focus
Corpus Callosum Connects hemisphere of cerebral cortex
4 main lobes Frontal, Occipital, temporal, parietal
Frontal Lobe Executive decision maker (interprets info from other areas and decides what to do with it) Planning/ decision making/ reasoning Memory/ personality/ emotions/ social control
Occipital Lobe Process visual info Where we see
Temporal Lobe Process auditory info Process taste/smell Recognize faces (LEFT ONLY - essential for understanding/ speaking language)
Parietal Lobe Perceive stimuli related to touch/ pressure/ temperature/ pain Process visual info
Motor Cortex Where movement messages occur Sends messages to other parts of body
Somatosensory Cortex Process touch sensitivity Most sensitive touch area (more area dedicated sense) - ex. fingertips vs back
Broca's Area (In left Frontal lobe next to motor cortex - area that controls facial movement) Allows for speech
Wernicke's Area (Left temporal lobe only) Allows for language understanding
Angular Gyrus (In left parietal lobe) Taking in visual info, converting into auditory code for understanding (hearing voice in head while reading)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
