on the castle walls of elsinore
the scholar horatio
is brought out to stand and watch them with Marcellus and barnardo
so that he might better asses the ghost's authenticity.
althought intially doubtful,
the ghost sooon appears and looks very much like Hamlet sr the former king of DENMARK.
after the ghost disappears,
horatio recounts how hamlet sr had previously killed fortinbras sr,, king of NORWAY
in single combat which in the forfeiture of land
and now young fortinbras
insists on reclaiming his father's long land.
upon the ghost;s return HORATIO
attempts to speak with it but to no avail
and so they decide to tell hamlet he must not persist in
mourning the lost of his father's
and that such an act shows a will against God.
Soon after, horatio and Marcellus arrive
to privately tell hamlet
about the appearance of his father's ghost.
BLANK agreees that he will stand Hamlet, watch
that evening to await the arrival
of thee ghost and will attempt to speak to it.
eventually, laetes
preparing to leave for france
and offered Ophelia some departing advice
about hamlet.
he states that since hamlet is a prince
he will someday have a higher responsibility to denmark
and therefore will not be able to marry her.
When Laertes
departs polonius
initiates a more aggressive verbal attack on ophelia
telling her not to dishonor
the family or his good name
that evening as hamlet horatio and Marcellus
stand watch the ghost
does in fact reappear and beckons Hamlet to follow.
once alone, the ghost
reveals that he was in fact murdered by claudius
while he slept in the orchard.
BLANK has poured claudius, poison
into his ear, killing Hamlet sr, quickly.
now the ghost
has returned to seek justice
for his murder and demands hamlet
to take revenge but warns him not to harm gertrude
but rather to let her guilty conscience
be her punishment
BLANK and the ghost have Hamlet, horation and marcellus
swear to secrecy before returning to the castle where Hamlet states he may pretend to be insanee
and they should not take notice of his odd behavior
