What are the four types of cells found in bone tissue? Osteocytes, osteoblasts, osteoprogenitor cells, osteoclasts.
What is the main function of osteoblasts? To synthesize and secrete the bone matrix, aiding in bone formation.
What is the role of osteoclasts in bone tissue? Osteoclasts break down bone matrix during bone resorption.
What is the primary structural unit of compact bone? The osteon (Haversian system).
What is the difference between compact bone and spongy bone? Compact bone is dense and forms the outer layer of bones; spongy bone is porous and found inside bones, especially at the ends of long bones.
What are the two main divisions of the human skeleton? Axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton.
Which bones make up the axial skeleton? Skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.
Which bones are included in the appendicular skeleton? Bones of the upper and lower limbs, and the pectoral and pelvic girdles.
What is the difference between red and yellow bone marrow? Red marrow produces blood cells; yellow marrow stores fat.
What is the function of the periosteum? A dense connective tissue covering the bone that aids in growth, repair, and attachment of tendons and ligaments.
