| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is homeostasis? | The body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes. |
| Why is homeostasis important? | Without it, cells can’t function properly, leading to sickness or death. |
| Which body systems help maintain homeostasis? | The nervous and endocrine systems mainly control balance through communication and hormones. |
| What happens when homeostasis fails? | The body may develop diseases or organ dysfunction because internal balance is lost. |
| What are biomolecules? | Large molecules made by living organisms that are essential for life. |
| What are the four main biomolecule types? | Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. |
| What is the main function of carbohydrates? | They provide quick energy for cells. |
| Why are proteins important? | They build and repair tissues and control chemical reactions as enzymes. |
| What is the basic unit of life? | The cell. |
| What does the cell membrane do? | It controls what enters and exits the cell, helping maintain balance. |
| What is mitosis? | The process where a cell divides into two identical cells for growth and repair. |
| Why is cell reproduction important? | It allows organisms to grow, heal, and pass on genetic information. |
| What is a tissue? | A group of similar cells working together for a specific function. |
| What are the four main tissue types? | Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. |
| What is the role of epithelial tissue? | It covers body surfaces and forms protective barriers and glands. |
| What are bones and cartilage made of? | Specialized connective tissues that form the skeleton’s framework. |
| What is the main job of cartilage? | To cushion joints and provide flexible support. |
| What are articulations? | Joints—places where two bones meet to allow movement or provide stability. |
| What happens during muscle contraction? | Muscle fibers shorten as actin and myosin filaments slide past each other to create movement. |
| What are two other functions of muscles besides movement? | They maintain posture and help produce body heat. |
