What are Interphalangeal joints? Hinge-type synovial joints capable of flexion and extension
What joint is the largest and one of the most complex and most commonly injured joints in the body? The knee, or tibiofemoral joint
What percentage of body weight is skeletal muscle? From 40% to 50%
What does the term posture mean? simply maintaining optimal body position
What is ATP? a nucleotide called adenosine triphosphate
What is muscle fatigue? a condition in which the muscle does not respond to the strongest stimuli
What is disuse atrophy? During prolonged inactivity, muscles usually shrink in mass.
What is the graded strength principle in relation to muscles? The fact that skeletal muscles contract with varying degrees of strength at different times
What is the cardiac muscle? The heart
List 3 characteristics of skeletal muscle cells 1. Excitability (irritability)—ability to be stimulated 2. Contractility—ability to contract, or shorten, and produce body movement 3. Extensibility—ability to extend, or stretch, thereby allowing muscles to return to their resting length
