Week 7: Assignment - StudyStack Set 1
| Homeostasis | Homeostasis refers to stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body. It is an organism’s ability to keep a constant internal environment |
| Metabolism | The term metabolism is used to describe all the chemical reactions that occur in body cells. |
| Negative Feedback Loops | They oppose or “negate” a change (such as a drop in temperature) by creating a re-sponse (production of heat) that is opposite in direction to the initial disturbance (fall in temperature below a normal set point). |
| Positive Feedback Loops | Instead of opposing a change in the internal environment and caus-ing a return to normal, positive feedback tends to amplify or rein-force the change that is occurring |
| pH levels | • A pH of 7 indicates neutrality (equal amounts of H and OH). • A pH of less than 7 indicates acidity (more H than OH). • A pH of greater than 7 indicates alkalinity (more OH than H). |
| Lipids | water-insoluble organic bio-molecules. Lipids ordinarily do not dissolve in water |
| Triglycerides | or fats, are the most abundant lipids, and they function as the body’s most concentrated source of energy. |
| Phospholipids | lipid compounds similar to triglycerides. |
| Functions of Epithelial Tissue | protection, sensory, secretion, absorption, excretion |
| Functions of Connective Tissue | connects, supports, transports, and defends. |
