| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Basement Membrane | a thin, extracellular matrix (ECM) layer that separates epithelial and endothelial cells from the underlying connective tissue. |
| Connective Tissue | provides support, protection, and structure to other tissues and organs in the body |
| Cutaneous Membrane | also known as the skin, is the largest organ of the body that covers and protects the underlying tissues and organs |
| Ectoderm | the outermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, |
| Endoderm | the innermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development |
| Goblet Cell | a specialized epithelial cell found in the respiratory and digestive tracts that secretes mucus to protect and lubricate the lining of these organs |
| Histogenesis | the process of tissue formation from undifferentiated cells, particularly during embryonic development |
| Basophil | a type of white blood cell that are rare but play a crucial role in the immune response, particularly allergic reactions and parasite defense |
| chemotaxis | the directed movement of a cell or organism in response to a chemical gradient, leading it toward attractants (like food) or away from repellents (like toxins) |
| Antigen | a substance that can trigger an immune response, causing the body to produce antibodies against it |
| Antibody | a protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a specific foreign substance, known as an antigen |
