UNIT 3, CHPT 9
CHAPTER 9.1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what is a genome?` | genetic material of an organism/virus |
| what are chromosomes? | cellular structures consisting of one DNA molecule and it's associated protein molecules |
| what are chromatins? | complexes of DNA and protein |
| what are somatic cells? | body cells |
| what are gametes? | sperm/egg cells |
| what are sister chromatids? | two copies of a duplicated chromosome, attached to each other at the centromere. (two make up one chromosome) |
| what are cohesions? | protein complexes that hold sister chromatids together |
| what is a centromere? | region on each sister chromatid where it is most closely attached to it's sister chromatid |
| what are sister chromatids once they seperate? | they are now considered individual chromosomes |
| what is mitosis? | growth, development, and repair of cells. creates genetically IDENTICAL cells. (used in somatic cells) |
| what is cytokinesis? | division of cytoplasm. (happens at the end in BOTH mitosis and meiosis) |
| when meiosis occurs, how many chromosomes are in a gamete? | 23 chromosomes, one set |
| how many chromosomes are in two fertilized and fused gametes? | 46 chromosomes, two sets |
