TermDefinition
Depolarization When a stimulus causes the cell membrane to become less negative
All-or-nothing event An action potential either happens completely when the threshold is reached, or not at all.
Neuron an electrically excitable cell that transmits and receives signals throughout the body, acting as the basic building block of the nervous system.
Dendrites These are branched extensions that receive signals from other neurons
Synapses These are the communication points where one neuron's axon terminal meets another neuron's dendrite or cell body
Skeletal muscle a type of striated muscle tissue that is responsible for voluntary movements and maintaining posture.
Myofibrils Rod-like structures within muscle fibers that contain the contractile proteins actin and myosin
Sarcomeres Repeating units of myofibrils that are responsible for muscle contraction.
Cardiac muscle the involuntary, striated muscle tissue that forms the wall of the heart, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.
Smooth muscle muscle tissue in which the contractile fibrils are not highly ordered, occurring in the gut and other internal organs and not under voluntary control.
