Spanish-American War Conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States. Fought mainly for the issue of Cuban independence from Spain. Also fought in the Philippines and Caribbean.
Yellow Journalism Exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to attract readers.
Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico Territory gained by the U.S. as a result of the Spanish-American War.

Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
The U.S.S. Maine This was a ship sent to Havana Harbor, Cuba, and exploded. It was blamed on the Spanish by newspapers. Drummed up support for the Spanish-American War.
Sanford B. Dole Helped overthrow the queen of Hawaii and established himself as leader and refused to give up power. Pushed for America to annex Hawaii.
Alfred Mahan Navy Captain who wrote in his book, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, that a nation's strength depends on its naval might. Leading imperialist.
Dollar Diplomacy Foreign policy created under President Taft providing economic assistance in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Hawaii Increased the military might of the U.S. by providing a strategic naval base at Pearl Harbor.
Roosevelt Corollary 1904 extension of the Monroe Doctrine. Declaring that the U.S. would act as an international police power in Latin America.
Effects of the Spanish-American War -Spain loses most of it's empire -The Platt Amendment allows the U.S. to intervene in Cuba -The U.S. acquired the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico -The U.S. increases it's strength as a world power -The U.S. expands its economic markets.
Rough Riders Volunteer cavalry led by Teddy Roosevelt. Gained fame at the Battle of San Juan Hill.
Panama Canal Connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, built from 1904 - 1914. Helped improve trade and military transportation. The Spanish-American War demonstrated the need for this.
Big Stick Policy Assistant Secretary of the Navy under McKinley who later fought at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Also, VP. Then VP after McKinley's assassination. He was known as a trust-buster and the first Progressive President.
William McKinley 25th president responsible for Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, and the Annexation of Hawaii, imperialism. Is assassinated by an anarchist.
Anti-Imperialists Objected to the annexation of the Philippines and the building of an American empire.
Economic Benefits of Annexing Hawaii Natural Resources (Sugar, pineapples), trade, and providing a place for American ships to refuel in the Pacific
