Unit2 Cell Processes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | A process where water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight are used to make food for plants |
| Cellular respiration | A process where glucose (sugar) and oxygen are used to make energy/ATP |
| ATP | An energy molecule. |
| Glucose | A large sugar molecule that can move across the cell membrane and in and out of cells |
| Carbon dioxide | A gas that is made of 1 carbon (C) atom and 2 oxygen atoms. CO2. We breathe this gas out |
| Oxygen | A gas and element. The gas is what we breathe in |
| Chloroplast | A plant only organelle that does photosynthesis |
| Mitochondria | An organelle that does respiration. It takes in glucose and oxygen to make carbon dioxide, water, and ATP |
| Reactants | Something that is put into a reaction. The “ingredients” of the reaction |
| Product | Something that is made by a reaction |
| Diffusion | Conditions in which molecules of a substance are spread evenly throughout a space |
| Active Transport | Moving something across the cell membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. Energy is needed |
| Passive Transport | Moving something across the cell membrane, from an area of high to low concentration. No energy is needed |
| Osmosis | The movement of water across the cell membrane |
| Atom | The basic unit of a chemical element |
| Element | A chemical substance that cannot be broken down into other substances |
| Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together that can take part in a chemical reaction |
