How does your mental health impact your effectiveness on patient care? It affects my focus, empathy, and ability to make safe decisions. Stress, anxiety, or fatigue can lead to mistakes in imaging, miscommunication, or slower response times. Being distracted due to stress could lead to mispositioning a patient for an X-ray.
Stress Management Strategies: Deep breathing exercises, Mindfulness or meditation, Time management, Regular breaks and Peer support. Managing stress improves accuracy, communication, and patient comfort.
Important Elements of patient history. Chief complaint; Onset, duration, and severity of symptoms; Past medical history; Medications and allergies; and Previous imaging studies.
What is objective data? Measurable and observable facts: Vital signs (blood pressure, temperature), Swelling or bruising, and Open wounds
Pain Assessment Questions Ask: Location, intensity, duration, character, aggravating/ relieving factors. Avoid: Asking “It can’t be that bad, right?” or leading questions
Medical Terminology Use Adapt your language to the patient’s understanding. Avoid jargon; explain terms simply.

Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow): Physiological (food, water) Safety Love/belonging Esteem Self-actualization
Nonverbal Communication Body language, facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye contact, and tone of voice.
Music of Speech The rhythm, pitch, tone, and cadence in speech that convey meaning and emotion.
Negative Communication Examples Interrupting, Dismissing concerns, Using sarcasm and Speaking too quickly
Consent Before Touching Always ask:“May I examine you?” or “I need to position you for this X-ray, is that okay?”
Intoxicated Patients: Assess for safety Speak calmly and clearly Avoid confrontation Ensure informed consent is obtained when possible
What is an Advanced Directive? A legal document specifying a patient’s wishes regarding medical care if they cannot make decisions themselves.
Working with Geriatric Patients Guide Speak slowly and clearly Allow time for response Be patient with mobility or hearing limitations
What is an inpatient? Patient admitted to the hospital
What is an outpatient? Patient comes for a procedure or imaging without hospital admission
