Homeostasis A state of relative constancy
Set point The normal reading or range of normal
Epidemiology The study of the occurrence, distribution, and transmission of diseases in human populations
Intrinsic control Autoregulation
Hypothalamus The body’s thermostat
Pathogenesis The course of disease development
DNA Double-helix strand of nucleotides
Free radical A functional group that is temporarily unattached and is highly reactive because of unpaired electrons

Hypertonic A saline solution that contains a higher concentration of salt than a red blood cell
Nervous tissue The type of tissue that contains cells called neurons

Osteoblasts Small cells that synthesize and secrete a specialized organic matrix
Isotonic contraction A contraction in which the tension within the muscle remains the same but the length changes
Iron The substance that attracts oxygen in the myoglobin molecule
