QuestionAnswer
Compare the number of factory workers from 1860 to 1890. 900,000 in 1860, and 3.2 million in 1890.
What were many skilled workers forced to do? Make the transition to semiskilled or unskilled.
What happened as machines took the place of human work? Work became monotonous.
How did the job of doing repetitive work effect the pride workers took in their work? They had little pride in their work.
How long was the work day? 10-14 hours
Define real wages- Inflation of about 10% from 1860-1890.
How much did most industrial workers earn in a year in 1890? $400-$500
How much was needed to live a comfortable life? $600
Define company towns- Towns run by companies
How did some companies pay their workers? Scrip-company money
Where was this "money" good? Company stores
Tell about prices at the company store? Higher prices than other stores in town.
Tell about safety of factory workers? Dangerous, because the machines were grouped really close together which increased the injury rate.
List all the things miners/factory workers breathed. Coal dust, saw dust, toxic fumes, cotton dust, stone dust.
Where did many immigrants "flock"? The cities
Why? So they could live in ethnic homogeneous neighborhoods like "Little Italy".
What did most workers blame the immigrants for? Low wages
What caused a distrust of the immigrants by many native born Americans? The differences in customs, dress, and language of the new arrivals.
List 9 reasons many people were attracted to cities. Running water Modern plumbing museums libraries theaters shops convenient transportation a lot to see and do promising jobs
What city became the second largest in the world? New York
Define tenements- Poorly constructed and cramped 5 or 6 story buildings, housing immigrants.
Describe the rooms No windows, dark, narrow, airless.
What problem did the lack of proper sanitation cause? The tenements became foul-smelling and vermin-infested.
What other problem did this lead to? Typhoid and other diseases
Tell about police and fire protection- There was a shortage
Tell about city water- Impure and sewers were clogged
Tell about rivers and harbors- Polluted by sewage and factory wastes.
Tell about air Fouled by smoke from thousands of chimneys.
