Where does gas exchange occur in the respiratory system? Alveoli in the lungs
What muscle is primarily responsible for breathing? The diaphragm
What is the main function of the digestive system? Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients
In which organ does most nutrient absorption occur? Small intestine
What are the main functions of the liver? Detoxification, bile production, and metabolism
What is the function of the kidneys? Filter blood, remove waste, and regulate fluid balance
What is the functional unit of the kidney called? Nephron
Which gland is known as the “master gland” of the endocrine system? The pituitary gland
What hormone regulates blood sugar levels? Insulin
Which organs produce gametes in males and females? Testes (males) and ovaries (females)
What is the primary male sex hormone? Testosterone
What is the primary female sex hormone? Estrogen
What structure connects the fetus to the placenta? Umbilical cord
What is homeostasis? The maintenance of a stable internal environment
What is the difference between systemic and pulmonary circulation? Systemic carries blood to the body; pulmonary carries blood to the lungs
What type of tissue lines organs and body cavities? Epithelial tissue
Which organ system provides structure and protection for the body? Skeletal system
What part of the brain regulates body temperature and hunger? Hypothalamus
What is the function of red blood cells? Transport oxygen using hemoglobin
Which body system removes carbon dioxide from the body? Respiratory system
What is peristalsis? Wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract
What is the function of the endocrine system? Secretes hormones to regulate body functions
Which structure carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder? Ureters
What is the largest organ in the human body? The skin
What type of joint is found in the shoulder and hip? Ball-and-socket joint
What is the basic functional unit of the nervous system? Neuron
Which system produces and secretes hormones? Endocrine system
