Dermis The deeper of the two major layers of the skin, composed of dense fibrous connective tissue interspersed with glands, nerve endings, and blood vessels
Arrector pili muscle Smooth muscle of the skin, attached to hair follicles. "Goose bumps"
Basophil White blood cell that stains readily with basic
anitgen Substances, usually a protein fragment, that causes an immune response
Oxytocin Hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary gland before and after delivering a baby; thought to initiate and maintain labor, as well as cause the release of breast milk into ducts of the mammary glands.
Positive feedback feedback control system that is stimulatory; tends to amplify or reinforce a change in the internal environment.
Negative Feedback feedback control system in which the level of a variable is changed in the direction opposite to that of the initial stimulus.
Amino Acids Types of chemical unit from which proteins are built; also have other functions made up of a carbon atom to which are bonded an amino group and carboxyl group
denature To alter the shape of a protein by a change in pH, heat, or some other manner to change its chemical properties.
enzyme biochemical catalyst that allows chemical reactions tot take place; functional proteins that regulate various metabolic pathways of the body.
functional protein Category of proteins that affect the functional operations of a cell; contrast to structural protein
any of the category of proteins with the primary function of forming structures of the cell or tissue; contrast with functional protein.
