Boating Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Abeam | opposite the middle of ship |
| Aground | a vessel that has accidentally gone ashore |
| Amidship | midpoint of a vessel |
| Anchor | device that holds a vessel in place |
| Bearing | the horizontal direction of an object |
| Bow | front of the boat |
| Capacity Plate | the maximum weight and amount of people a boat can hold safely |
| Can buoy | green, odd numbers, can shaped |
| Capsize | turn on the side or to turn completely over |
| Cardinal Points | North, South, East, West |
| Come About | change direction |
| Compass | a device that’s tells you what direction you’re going |
| Displacement Hull | cut through water and moves slowly |
| Draft | direction between the waterline and the lowest point of the hull |
| Float Plan | a doc that details a planned boating trip |
| Give-way vessel | the vessel that is required to change its direction or speed to avoid a collision |
| Gunwale | upper edge of a vessel’s side |
| Hypothermia | a condition where the body loses heat faster than it can produce it |
| Nun buoy | red, cone shaped, Red, Right, Returning |
| PFD | Personal Floatation Device |
| Planning Hull | a hull that is designed to skim across the surface of the water at high speeds |
| Port | the left side of a boat |
| Privileged vessel | stand on vessel, should maintain speed and direction to avoid collision |
| Rules of the Road | 1. Practice good seamanship 2. Maintain safe speed 3. Keep proper lookout |
| Starboard | the right side of a vessel |
