Theme The message of the story. EX. One major theme in Speak is finding your voice after trauma — Melinda learns to speak up and reclaim her identity.
Conflict Main problem of a story. EX. Melinda struggles with internal conflict after the party and external conflict with peers who ostracize her for calling the cops.
First Person Perspective a narrative perspective where the story is told from the viewpoint of a character within the story, using pronouns like "I," "me," and "my" EX. The novel is told entirely in Melinda’s voice, letting readers experience her thoughts and emotions directly: “I am an outcast.”
Symbolism an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings EX. The tree Melinda works on in art class symbolizes her growth and healing throughout the year.
Motif a motif is a repeated symbol, idea, image, or detail that appears throughout a story to help create meaning and connect to the larger theme EX. The repeated image of silence vs. voice is a motif — it represents Melinda’s journey from being voiceless to finally speaking her truth.
Noun Person, Place, Thing, or idea EX. School, Melinda, and art are nouns in the story.
Verb An action word or state of being EX. Speak, hide, and draw are verbs connected to Melinda’s actions and emotions.
Adjective A word that describes/modifies a noun EX. Words like silent, lonely, and strong describe Melinda at different points in the novel.
