| articular cartilage | thin layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the articular or joint surfaces of epiphyses. Cushions jolts and blows |
| Periosteum | dense, white fibrous membrane that covers bone except at joint surfaces |
| Lamellae | layers of hard bone matrix that make up compact bone |
| Lacunae | small spaces in bone matrix that contain tissue fluid and where bone cells lie imprisoned between hard layers of lamellae |
| Osteomyelitis | bacterial infection of the bone and marrow tissue |
| Foramen magnum | hole through which the spinal cord enters the cranial cavity |
| Mandible | lower jawbone; largest, strongest bone of the face |
| Fontanels | "soft spots" where ossification is incomplete at birth; allow some compression of the skull during birth |
| sacral canal | inferior part of the vertebral (spinal) canal |
| Sacral hiatus | gap in posterior wall of sacral canal in the bottom segments of sacrum |
