TermDefinition
articular cartilage thin layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the articular or joint surfaces of epiphyses. Cushions jolts and blows
Periosteum dense, white fibrous membrane that covers bone except at joint surfaces
Lamellae layers of hard bone matrix that make up compact bone
Lacunae small spaces in bone matrix that contain tissue fluid and where bone cells lie imprisoned between hard layers of lamellae
Osteomyelitis bacterial infection of the bone and marrow tissue
Foramen magnum hole through which the spinal cord enters the cranial cavity
Mandible lower jawbone; largest, strongest bone of the face
Fontanels "soft spots" where ossification is incomplete at birth; allow some compression of the skull during birth
sacral canal inferior part of the vertebral (spinal) canal
Sacral hiatus gap in posterior wall of sacral canal in the bottom segments of sacrum
