Week 7: Assignment -
Homeostasis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Homeostasis | The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes. |
| Negative feedback | A control mechanism that reduces or reverses a change to restore balance (e.g., body temperature regulation). |
| Positive feedback | A control mechanism that amplifies a change (e.g., oxytocin release during childbirth). |
| Example of negative feedback | Blood glucose regulation via insulin and glucagon. |
| Role of hypothalamus in homeostasis | Acts as the control center for temperature, thirst, hunger, and hormone regulation |
| What happens when homeostasis fails? | Disease or dysfunction may occur, such as diabetes or dehydration |
| Sensor (receptor) | Detects changes in the internal environment and sends signals to the control center. |
| Effector | Carries out the response to restore homeostasis (e.g., sweat glands, muscles). |
| Set point | The ideal value or range the body tries to maintain (e.g., 98.6°F for body temperature). |
| Example of homeostasis in action | Shivering when cold to generate heat and restore body temperature. |
