IAPS Unit B #2
Elements, Compounds, Chemical Formulas
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Element Symbol | It consists of 1 or 2 letters. The first letter is always capitalized. |
| Molecule | two or more atoms put together by chemical bonds. |
| Compound (in terms of atoms) | More than one type of element put together. |
| Chemical formula | a shorthand way to identify the kind and number of atoms that make up a compound. |
| Chemical equation | another kind of model for a chemical reaction; reactants and products separated by an arrow. |
| Reactants | They are on the LEFT side of the chemical equation. |
| Products | They are listed on the right side of the chemical equation. |
| Scientific Theory | a well-tested, in-depth explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results. |
| Scientific Law | a description of an observed event or a concept. |
| Endothermic reaction | a reaction that absorbs energy; the reaction may get cooler in temperature. |
| Exothermic reaction | a reaction that releases energy, usually in the form of heat and light. The reaction will get hotter in temperature. |
| pH scale | a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. It runs from 0 – 14, with the low numbers representing acidic substances, and the higher numbers representing basic substances. |
| Acidic | the higher the concentration of acid in a solution; the lower the pH number. |
| Replication | when your investigation can be performed by another scientist with the same results. |
| Repetition | when you test your experiment repeatedly through trials. |
| Empirical evidence | data acquired by observation and experimentation. |
