| Law of Superposition | Rock layers at the bottom are oldest; top are youngest |
| Original Horizontality | All layers of rocks are deposited horizontally |
| Intrusion | contact metamorphism all around it (top and bottom) |
| Extrusion | contact metamorphism on the bottom only |
| unconformity | gap in geologic records |
| index fossil | a fossil that is formed at a very specific time period |
| orogeny | crust is folded or distorted (change in earths crust caused by tectonic forces) |
| porosity | how much empty space in the soil to hold water |
| permeability | how easily water can pass through soil |
| infiltration | how water enters soil from the surface |
| water retention | how easily water can hold soil |
| runoff | any water that does not get absorbed into the ground |
| deposition | the process where sediments are added to a landform or landmass. |
| Relative age of rock layers | Law of Superposition is used to determine the RAORL |
| Order of events in earths history | the law of superposition helps determine this |
| downcutting | the deepening of a river valley by erosion |
| Aquifers | underground layers of rock, sand, and gravel that hold and transmit groundwater. |
