| tumbleweed | dried-up plants that break off from their roots and roll across the plains |
| prairie dog | ground squirrel of the North American plains; has done more to shape the surface of the continent than any other animal except the beaver |
| Ozarks | heavily forested hills west of the Mississippi |
| Black Hills | range of mountains averaging 3,000 feet in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming; named by the Sioux natives for the dark color from a distance |
| Mount Rushmore | monument in the Black Hills with carvings of the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt |
