Law Chapter 4

TermDefinition
Contempt of Court Disrespecting or interfering with the authority of a court, which can involve disobeying a court order.
Crime An illegal act that can lead to punishment by law, such as a fine or jail time.
Defense The act of protecting from attack, danger, or injury.
Felony A serious crime, like murder, burglary, or grand theft, that is punishable by more than one year.
Immunity The body's ability to resist and fight off disease.
Misdemeanor A type of offense punishable under criminal law.
Plea Bargaining Agreements between defendants and prosecutors in which defendants agree to plead guilty.
Probable Cause There are sufficient facts and circumstances for a reasonable person to believe that a crime has been committed.
Procedural Defense Legal argument that challenges the validity of a case based on errors in the legal process, rather than the facts of the crime itself.
Punishment An act done as a consequence of a behavior, that can occur in the future.
Self-Defense Use of reasonable force to protect oneself or others from harm due to an aggressor's attack or threat.
Substantive Defense Challenges that prosecution's case by arguing that the defendant did not commit the crime.
Vicarious Criminal Liability Holds one party responsible for a crime committed by another based on a specific relationship.
White-collar crime Category of non-violent, financially motivated offenses committed by individuals or corporations.
