| epic | a long narrative poem recounting the deeds of a legendary or historical figure |
| fertile | able to support the healthy growth of many things, especially plants |
| irrigation | a man-made system for moving water from its source to where it can be used for growing crops |
| metallurgy | the branch of science and technology concerned with the properties of metals and their production and purification |
| monarchy | a form of government in which authority over the people is retained through a ruling family |
| polytheist | a person who believes in or worships more than one god |
| scribe | a person trained to write and keep records |
| silt | fine sand, soil, or clay carried by running water and deposited on land |
| ziggurat | a pyramidal temple built in ancient Mesopotamia |
