| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Relative Constancy | The naturally chaotic variability of conditions and functions observed within the healthy range. |
| Effector | Organs, such as muscles or glands, that directly influence controlled physiological variables |
| Cholesterol | A steroid found in the plasma membrane surrounding every body cell. |
| Quaternary Protein Structure | A protein that contains clusters of more than one polypeptide chain, all linked together into one big molecule. |
| Osmosis | Passive transport of water through a selectively permeable membrane in the presence of at least one impermeable solute. |
| Exocytosis | The process by which large molecules can leave the cell even though they are too large to move out through the plasma membrane |
| snRNA | Single, folded strand of RNA (combined with polypeptide chains) |
| siRNA | Short segment of double-strand RNA (only 20-25 nucelotides long) |
| Nervous Tissue | Mixture of many cell types, including several types of neurons (conduction cells) and neuroglia (support cells) |
| Connective Tissue | Sparsely arranged cells surrounded by a large proportion f extracellular matrix often containing structural fibers (and sometimes mineral crystals) |
| Bones | Rigid, mineralized structures that help perform 5 major roles in the body: Hematopoiesis, Mineral Storage, movement, protection and support. |
| Medullary cavity | A tubelike hollow space in the diaphysis of a long bone, also called marrow cavity. |
| External occipital protuberance | Prominent projection on the posterior surface in the midline a short distance above the foramen magnum. |
| Styloid process | Sharp protuberance at the distal end of the radius |
| Synchondroses | Joints that have a hyaline cartilage between articulating bones. |
