| Transactional | Communication is a simultaneous, two-way process where everyone is sending and receiving messages at all times. |
| Dynamic | Communication is constantly changing, moving, and evolving over time. |
| Symbolic | Communication relies on arbitrary symbols (words, gestures) that represent ideas, objects, or feelings. |
| Process | Communication is an ongoing, continuous activity, not a single event. |
| Source, Message, Channel, Receiver | The basic components of the communication loop. |
| Encoding | The process of translating thoughts and ideas into a message (words, gestures). |
| Decoding | The process of interpreting the message and assigning meaning. |
| Feedback | The response (verbal or nonverbal) a Receiver provides to a Source's message. |
| Feedforward | Information sent before the main message to prepare the Receiver. |
