| Levels of Structural Organization | The body’s organization from simplest to most complex — chemical → cellular → tissue → organ → organ system → organism. |
| Homeostasis | The body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes (example: regulating body temperature). |
| Anatomical Position | The standard position for anatomical reference — standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward. |
| Elements of Life | The four main elements in the human body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. |
| pH Scale | A scale from 0–14 measuring acidity or alkalinity; 7 is neutral, lower is acidic, higher is basic. |
| Cell Membrane | A selectively permeable barrier that regulates what enters and exits the cell, maintaining internal balance. |
| Mitochondria | The “powerhouse” of the cell — produces ATP (energy) through cellular respiration. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells performing a common function; the four main types are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. |
| Integumentary System | Includes skin, hair, and nails; functions in protection, temperature regulation, and sensory reception. |
