| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Boundary line | a line that divides a coordinate plane into two half-planes |
| Consistent system | a system of equations or inequalities that has at least one solution |
| Elimination method | a method used to solve systems of equations in which one variable is eliminated by adding or subtracting two equations of the system |
| Inconsistent system | a system of equations or inequalities that has no solution |
| Inequality | a statement that compares two expressions by using one of the following signs: ﹤,﹥, ≤, ≥, or ≠ |
| Infinite solutions | all numbers are solutions; both sides of an equation are the same or two graphed lines coincide |
| Linear Function | A function that can be written in the form y = mx + b, where x is the independent variable and m and b are real numbers. Its graph is a line. |
| Parallel lines | lines in the same plane that do not intersect |
| Perpendicular Lines | lines that intersect at 90° angles |
| Simultaneous Equations | two or more algebraic equations that share variables |
| Solution to a System of Equations/Inequalities | any ordered pair that satisfies all the equations/inequalities in a linear system |
| Substitution Method | a method used to solve systems of equations by solving an equation for one variable and substituting the resulting expression into the other equation(s) |
| x-intercept | the x-coordinate of the point where a graph intersects the x-axis |
| y-intercept | the y-coordinate of the point where a graph intersects the y-axis |
