TermDefinition
Thalamus- sensory information except for smell
Amygdala- associating emotions with experiences - fight or flight
Hippocampus- formation of new memories (going to sombr)
Hypothalamus- regulation of body functions (sleep/temp) and motivation (hungry/thirst/sexy time)
Prefrontal Cortex - attention, self-control, social processes (interactions)
(Facial Recognition--really part of visual) - Fusiform Face Area
Cerebral Cortex - thoughts, planning
Primary Auditory Cortex - hearing, volume/direction of a sound
Primary Visual Cortex - vision, orientation, size, and color
Primary Somatosensory Cortex- touch, right side of the body
Primary Motor Cortex- motor functions, left side of the body
Endorphins- Pain reduction and reward/runner’s high
Acetylcholine- motor controls over muscles, attention, memory, learning, and understanding when to sleep and rest your body.
Glutamate - enhanced action potentials, learning and memory
Serotonin- emotional states/impulse control - dreaming/relaxation
Dopamine - reward/motivation/motor control over voluntary movements
Lack of Dopamine - c an lead to Parkinson’s disease
Norepinephrine- Alertness and reaction time, helps you understand what's going on in chaotic situations
Lack of Serotonin - leads to anxiety, food cravings, aggressive behavior, When neurotransmitters miss the synapse, it will cause clinical depression
Excessive GABA - overexcitement in the brain, can destroy the neurons
Lack of GABA - can lead to epileptic seizures
GABA - anxiety reduction
Dendrites- short, branch-like extensions of the cell body, receive signals from the neuron’s cell body
cell body - collects the information from neurons, electrical currents transmit to the axon
Axon- long narrow part of the cell body that connects one neuron to another, releases to the terminal buttons
terminal buttons- release chemical signals from the neuron into the synapse
Synapse- space where the neurons communicates through neurotransmitters - like a cliff
Neurons- individual cell in the nervous system
Neurotransmitters- chemical substances that carry one neuron to another, cycle is like a highway chemical substances that carry one neuron to another, cycle is like a highway
myelin sheath- protects the axon
Peripheral nervous system- skin, muscles, jaw
Nervous system - brain and spinal cord

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
