Select a quote that reveals that Dr. Frankenstein that Dr. Frankenstein has a “God” complex? I was surprised that among so many men of genius who had directed their inquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret.
What is mood? Mood is the emotional feeling that a literary work evokes in the reader, created through elements like setting, imagery, and word choice.
Define emaciated. Abnormally thin or weak, especially because of illness or a lack of food
What were the consequences Dr. Frankenstein endured for success? He became oppressed by a slow fever and very nervous.
Define simile and give an example from Frankenstein Ch. 4. -Comparing one thing to another using the words “like” or “as” -”No one can conceive the variety of feelings which bore me onwards, like a hurricane, in the first enthusiasm of success.
What is the strange system of human society was explained to the monster? Humans were in a caste system. If you were not born wealthy and/or into a noble or royal bloodline, you would rarely have the opportunity to move up in the system towards the top portion.
What does base mean in context to the story? evil and immoral
How does the monster respond to learning of the “…division of property, of immense wealth and squalid poverty, of rank, descent, and noble blood…”? He has sympathy for the poorer people and becomes more self-aware/introspective
In addition to learning of the true nature of humanity, what other realization greatly saddens the monster? He realizes all of these things during his self-reflection.
What was the name of the book that Felix used to instruct Safie (which the monster overheard)? Volney's Ruins of Empires
What does the monster mean when he notes that he can subsist on "a coarser diet" than man? food that is of inferior quality or less preparation
Define somber. Why is the monster somber in the end of Ch. 13? Dark or dull He is alone in the world with no family or friends and no idea of who created him.
