| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell | unit that makes up living things |
| cell membrane | barrier surrounding cells that act as a gate to protect the inside from outside |
| cell theory | all living organisms are made of cells, cells are the basic structure of living things, and all cells come from pre-existing cells |
| chromosome/chromatin | complex of DNA and proteins that form chromosomes. |
| loose/condesne | chromatin=loose chromosomes=condensed |
| cytoplasm | liquid/open space inside a cell, where key cellular activities take place |
| ER | part of a cell that is essential for making and processing proteins/lipids |
| eukaryote | anything that has cells with a nucleus and organelles |
| Golgi Apparatus | part in a cell that transforms proteins and lipids and sends them to correct locations. |
| homeostatis | a living organism maintaining a stable internal environment despite external environment changes |
| lipid bilayer | the double layer of lipids that form the basic structure of cell membranes |
| mitochondria | part of a cell that converts food to energy through cellular processes. |
| nucleus | part of a cell that that contains the cell's genetic material (DNA) |
| organelle | part of a cell that has a specific function that the cell needs |
| ribosome | part of a cell that reads DNA to create proteins (by linking amino acids together) |
| selective permeability | cell membranes ability to allow some substances to pass through while blocking others |
