Human Physiology
Week 1 - 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Neuromascular Junction (NMJ) | The process by which the body keeps a stable internal condition, like normal temperature and blood pressure. |
| Homeostasis | A connection point between a neuron and a muscle fiber where nerve impulses trigger contraction. |
| Mitochondria | A reflex pathway that allows a quick, automatic response to danger without needing brain input. |
| Reflex Arc | The “powerhouse” of the cell where ATP energy is made to fuel body processes. |
| ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) | A nerve signal that travels along the neuron, causing an electrical impulse in the body. |
| Action Potential | The main molecule that stores and releases energy in cells for muscle contraction and nerve activity. |
| Sarcomere | The “fight or flight” system that helps the body respond to stress or danger. |
| Sympathetic Nervous System | The smallest functional unit of a muscle fiber that shortens during contraction. |
| Hormone | The “rest and digest” system that helps the body relax and recover after stress. |
| Parasympathetic Nervous System | A chemical messenger released by glands that travels in the bloodstream to target organs. |
