azotemia (a-zoh-TEE-mee-uh or ay-zoh-TEE-mee-uh) azot/o = nitrogen-containing waste, urea -emia = blood condition the presence of nitrogen-containing waste in the bloodstream as a result of the kidneys failing to filter the blood
bacteriuria (bak-teer-ee-YOO ree-uh) bacteri/o = bacteria -uria = urine condition a condition of bacteria in the urine
cystalgia (sis-TAL-jee-uh) cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -algia = pain pain in the bladder
cystitis (sis-TYT-is) cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -itis = inflammation inflammation of the bladder
cystocele (SIS-toh-seel) cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -cele = protrusion an abnormal protrusion of the urinary bladder into the wall of the vagina
cystolith (SIS-toh-lith) cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -lith = stone a stone that has formed or lodged in the bladder; also called a vesical calculus
dysuria (dis-YOOR-ee-uh) dys- = painful, difficult -uria = urine condition a condition of difficulty or pain with urination
glomerulonephritis (gluh MAIR-yoo-loh-ne-FRYT-is) glomerul/o = glomerulus nephr/o = kidney -itis = inflammation inflammation of the glomeruli, marked by the spilling of blood and protein over into the urine
hematuria (hee-muh-TOOR-ee uh or hee-muh-TYOOR-ee-uh) hemat/o = blood -uria = urine condition blood or blood cells in the urine
hydronephrosis (hy-droh-ne FROH-sis) hydr/o = water nephr/o = kidney -osis = abnormal condition the swelling of one or both kidneys due to urine buildup from urinary tract obstruction
interstitial (in-tur-STISH-uhl) cystitis cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -itis = inflammation a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure and pain, pelvic pain, and frequent urination
nephritis (ne-FRYT-is) nephr/o = kidney -itis = inflammation inflammation of the kidney
nephrolithiasis (NEF-roh-li THY-uh-sis) nephr/o = kidney lith/o = stone -iasis = abnormal condition the condition of having stones form when urine crystallizes in the kidneys; also called kidney stones or renal calculi
nephrologist (ne-FRAHL-uh jist) nephr/o = kidney -logist = one who studies a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats condi tions of the kidneys
nephrology (ne-FRAHL-uh-jee) nephr/o = kidney -logy = study of the medical specialty related to the diagnosis and treatment of kidney conditions
nephroma (ne-FROH-muh) nephr/o = kidney -oma = tumor, mass a tumor of the kidney
nephrotic (ne-FRAHT-ik) syndrome nephr/o = kidney -tic = pertaining to a disorder in which the kidneys release too much protein into the urine (proteinuria); also known as nephrosis
neurogenic (noor-oh-JEN-ik) bladder neur/o = nerve -genic = produced by, producing a condition affecting the bladder and bladder con trol due to damage or disease of the brain, spinal cord, or central nervous system
nocturia (nahk-TOO-ree-uh or nahk-TYOO-ree-uh) noct/i = night -uria = urine condition excessive urination during the nigh
oliguria (ahl-ig-YOO-ree-uh) olig/o = small, scant -uria = urine condition production of very little urine (less than 400 mL/ day)
polycystic (pahl-ee-SIS-tik) kid ney disease poly- = many cyst/o = sac, pouch, urinary bladder -ic = pertaining to a condition in which the kidneys are covered with many fluid-filled cysts; also called PKD
polyuria (PAHL-ee-YOOR ee-uh) poly- = many -uria = urine condition producing excessive amounts of urine
proteinuria (proh-teen-YOO ree-uh or proht-en-YOO ree-uh) protein- = protein -uria = urine condition the presence of protein in the urine
pyelonephritis (PY-e-loh-ne FRYT-is) pyel/o = renal pelvis nephr/o = kidney -itis = inflammation inflammation of the kidney and renal pelvis (the area where the ureter is connected to the kidney)
renal cell carcinoma ren/o = kidney -al = pertaining to carcin/o = cancer -oma = tumor, mass, swelling a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the kidney
renal colic ren/o = kidney -al = pertaining to moderate to severe pain that is usually caused by the passage of a kidney stone
renovascular (ree-noh-VAS kyoo-lur) hypertension ren/o = kidney vascul/o = blood vessel -ar = pertaining to a condition in which a blockage of arteries in the kidneys causes high blood pressure
uremia (yoo-REE-mee-uh) ur/o = urine, urinary tract -emia = blood condition the collection of waste products in the blood; usu ally associated with kidney failure
urinary incontinence urin/o = urine, urinary tract -ary = pertaining to a general term for the inability to control the blad der, which leads to an involuntary loss of urine
