What are two major functions of the integumentary system? Sensation and temperature regulation.
How does the skin regulate body temperature? Through vasodilation and sweating to release heat, and vasoconstriction to conserve heat.
What type of receptors in the skin detect touch, pain, and temperature? Sensory receptors located in the dermis and epidermis.
What happens when the parathyroid gland fails to respond to calcium binding to its receptors? PTH secretion is disrupted, leading to hypocalcemia, muscle cramps, and potential hyperphosphatemia due to phosphate retention.
What is the main hormone secreted by the parathyroid gland and its function? Parathyroid hormone (PTH), which increases blood calcium levels by stimulating bone resorption, increasing kidney calcium reabsorption, and activating vitamin D.
What happens when calcium binds to troponin? Tropomyosin shifts away from actin binding sites, allowing myosin heads to form cross-bridges and cause contraction.
What do ligand-gated ion channels do? They open or close in response to a chemical messenger (ligand), allowing ions to move across the cell membrane.
What ions commonly move through ligand-gated ion channels? Potassium, sodium, chloride, and calcium.
