Lesson 9 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Dumbfound To make speechless with amazement
Ensue To follow; to come as a result of at a later time.
Era A particular period in history.
Flourish To thrive or prosper. To wave in the air. A sweeping motion. A showy burst of music. A fancy line or curve, added to something written.
Garrison Soldiers stationed in a place to protect it. A military place of protection. To provide soldiers with a place to live.
Grievous Causing grief or pain; hard to bear.
Hoard To save and put away, especially secretly.
Inundate To cover, as with water from a flood. To load with an excessive amount or number of something.
Invincible Impossible to defeat.
Nomad A member of a group that settles briefly in one place and then moves on to another.
Placate To stop from being angry; to calm.
Principal Most important. A person or thing that is of the greatest importance. The head of a school. The sum of money owed, not including the interest.
Recede To move back or drop to a lower level. To become fainter.
Ruthless Showing no mercy, pitiless.
Sacrifice Something given up for the sake of another. An offering to a god. To give up something for another. To offer something of value to a god.
