Define Metabolism. The sum total of all the physical and chemical reactions occurring in the body.
What is transcription and where in the cell does transcription occur? Transcription is the process of making mRNA from a DNA template. Transcription occurs inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
Name each of the three typical types of cell junctions and briefly describe them. Tight junctions form a seal between cells to prevent leaking. Desmosomes anchor cells together to resist stretching or pulling. Gap junctions form channels between cells for passage.
What are the four mechanisms of heat loss from the skin. Give an example of one. Radiation, conduction, convection, and evaporation. Evaporations occurs in the form of sweat.
List two functions of sebum. Sebum prevents water loss and is anti-fungal.
Identify the two types of bone formation. 1. Intramembranous Ossification where bone develops directly from mesenchyme. 2. Endochondral Ossification where bone develops by replacing a hyaline cartilage model.
List 5 major functions of bones. Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and hematopoiesis.
In which skin layer does the process of keratinization begin? Stratum granulosum.
Which subtype of fibrous joints is found only in the skull? Sutures.
What is the minimal level of stimulation required to cause a fiber to contract called? The threshold stimulus.
