Alamat Filipino word for legend or folktale; stories explaining how the world works or was made, or involving local flora and fauna.
Alliteration Repetition the same consonant sounds in two or more words (usually at the beginning).
Enjambment When a sentence 'steps over' a line break into the next line without pause.
Free Verse Flowing lines, usually unrhymed, with no fixed meter.
Imagery Descriptive sensory words and details that "paint a picture" for readers.
Metaphor A figure of speech that draws comparison between two unlike things without using "like" or "as."
Metonymy A figure of speech where a phrase or word is substituted for one closely related to it.
Motif Recurring element in a text that emphasizes a main theme or idea.
Narrative Voice The style or point of view through which a story is told (first, second, or third person).
Symbol/Symbolism Something that represents or stands for something else; concrete images expressing abstract ideas.
Tone The attitude in which an author expresses their idea; by style and word choice.
