| Tyrant | A cruel ruler King George the 3rd was a tyrant. |
| Constitution | An official document that outlines the rules and structure of a government The US Constitution gives us our rights. |
| Articles of Confederation | America’s first constitution. Described the organization and powers of the national government and some of the rights of citizens The Articles of Confederation were the first written from of government in the US. |
| Ratified | Approved The Constitution had to be ratified before it could be put into affect. |
| Confederation | A loose alliance of states The small states formed a Confederation to protect themselves. |
| Unicameral Legislature | One single legislative body Nebraska is the only state that has a unicameral legislature. |
| Bicameral | Two parts to Congress (House of Representatives and Senate) most US states have a bicameral. |
| Central Government | The primary authority of a nation. National. Federal. US The central government makes and enforces laws. |
| Sovereign | Each state has the power to make its own laws and rule itself A king and queen are sovereign rulers. |
| Ordinance | Official orders or laws The city passed a new ordinance that kids can't drive golf carts. |
| Northwest Ordinance of 1787 | Set up a government for the NW Territory and explained how new areas could become states, just like the ones that already existed. It also said that slavery wasn’t allowed in that area. The Northeast Ordinance of 1787 governed the Northwest Territory |
| Shay’s Rebellion | An uprising led by a former militia officer to protest the foreclosure of farms who couldn’t pay their taxes. Shay's Rebellion occurred in Massachusetts. |
| Federalism | The division of power between states and the federal government Federalism divides power between the state and the federal government. |
| Reserved Powers | Powers given to the states The regulation of speed limits is a reserved power. |
| Concurrent Powers | Powers that the state and federal government shares State and federal governments have concurrent powers on education. |
| Enumerated/Expressed Powers | Powers given to congress as stated in the constitution Making money is an enumerated power given by the constitution. |
| Implied Powers | Powers not specifically stated in the constitution but congress still has them An example of an implied power is a military draft. |
| Necessary and Proper Clause | Congress has the power to make any law to carry out its expressed powers. Also called the Elastic Clause It allows Congress to create laws that they think are needed. |
| Supremacy Clause | States that the Constitution and the Federal government are the highest law in the land Supremacy Clause means the federal law is superior to all other laws and treaties. |
