Nasopharnyngeal lymphatic tissue Adenoids
Adenoids masses of lymphatic tissue located in the nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose), playing a role in immune defense
Epiglottis A flap that covers the windpipe during swallowing
Paranasal sinuses Air-filled spaces around the nasal cavity
Visceral pleura Membrane covering the lungs
Atelectasis Collapsed lung "incomplete expansion"
Fistula An abnormal connection or passageway between two organs or vessels
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD Airway obstruction associated with emphysema and chronic bronchitis
Emphysema condition of inflated or swollen lungs

SOB Shortness of breath
RDS Respiratory distress syndrome
CPR Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, an emergency procedure
IPPB Intermittent positive pressure breathing (a type of respiratory therapy)
Stridor a harsh, high-pitched sound caused by upper airway obstruction
croup upper respiratory disorder causing swelling of the larynx and trachea where stridor occurs
Epistaxis nosebleed
Asthma Lower airway obstruction, causing wheezing, not stridor
Expectoration expelling material (like mucus or phlegm) from the lungs or airways
Expiration The act of breathing out air
Rhinorrhea Runny nose
Hemoptysis Spitting up blood from the lungs
Hematemesis Vomiting blood
Hemothorax Blood in the pleural cavity (chest)
-ptysis spitting or coughing up
Hypercapnia High carbon dioxide levels in the blood
Orthopnea difficulty breathing when lying down
Anosmia Loss of smell
Percussion Sharp, short blows to the surface of the chest
Auscultation Listening to sounds within the body, usually with a stethoscope
Rales Abnormal lung sounds heard during auscultation
Phren/o Diaphragm
Pulmonary parenchyma refers to the functional parts of the lungs, mainly the alveoli (air sacs) and bronchioles (small airways) where gas exchange occurs
Trachea The windpipe
Pharynx throat
Endotracheal intubation Tube is placed through the mouth to the trachea to establish an airway
-centesis Surgical puncture to remove fluid or gas
Mediastinum Space between the lungs in the chest
pleura double-layered membrane that surrounds each lung and lines the chest cavity
peritoneum large, thin, serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers most of the abdominal organs.
