Maria G. Lee 26 year old author and main character. 1st generation Korean-American. Born and raised in the Midwest. Rarely came in contact with Korean heritage until she went on trip to Korea.
Father Maria saw him as average father. Only thing different was he was a doctor and other child's parents we lawyers and businessmen.
Korean heritage Didn't observe Korean customs except not wearing shoes in the house which they thought was common sense. "forgot" she was Korean: 1. liked mac and cheese and pizza. 2. friends were causcasian. 3. didn't know name of Korean president
Korean Langauge Much harder than French/German. Shaped by Confucian rules of revernence. Speaker states position in relation to person adressed. Many titles.
Trip TO Korea felt prepared in language. She was classified as foriegner evrn though she looked like the natives. most racially and culturelly homogeneous country.
Traveling with Mom Treated awfully. Took long time to get cab. High fare and bad service.
Traveling with Dad Stop taxi easily. Polite. Much easier and they would be taken where they wanted to go.
Taxis 1.government enforces low fares 2.developed system of picking up individal passengers instead of more at once to increase profit 3.streets clogged with empty taxis, pedestrians and traffic
Korean Dad Easily talked with different respect levels. Story: Communists took his parents' possessions and he became a doctor. He eat a small breakfast, walked across a mountain studied and slept for few hours.
Maria in Korea alienated and culturally shut out. 1. pushy! even in Church 2. Rapidly ate food
Effects The story made Maria relaize how lucky she was. Made her feel th pain of Koreans enduring one hardship after another. Made her understand why Koreans acted the way they do. Proud of great grandfather who had a chinsa(hat)on grave because of PH.D
Summary She would never fully know Korean culture and language by just taking course. She would have to study, live in Korea and put a huge effort in.
